The deck is the wood part of the skateboard (if you didn’t already know that). Different types size decks can be used for different things. This article will help find the right deck for you.
Transition and Vert decks
If you like to skate in half pipes or pools your deck should be about 8.25″ to about 8.5″ wide. The wider the deck the more stable it usually is.
Street Decks
The best size for street skating is about a 7.5″-8.25″wide decks. The width of the deck (weather it is a street deck, a vert deck, or a deck to just cruise around on) you should get will depend on your shoe size. If you have big feet you should get a wider deck, but if you have smaller feet should get a deck that’s smaller in width. I ride a 7.75 inch wide deck, and wear a 11 in men’s size shoes. The smaller the board the is the easier it will be to do flip tricks, but it may be harder to keep your balance.
Vert and Street decks are the two main kind of decks, but you can use any size board you want to to go skate a pool, ollie down some stairs, or to drop in on Bob Burnquist’s mega ramp (I have never skated down a mega ramp or plan to, but using my experience with bombing hills I would think you would want a wider deck with decent sized wheels). There are other types of decks like helium, bamboo, carbon fiber, and so on. These decks usually cost a little bit more than the good ol’ Canadian maple decks that most pro decks are made from, but those boards do have their advantages (with helium boards you can ollie a little higher, carbon fiber decks are strong and have more pop as well, and the list goes on).

There are many reasons you may need to buy skateboard trucks. You may be building your own dream skateboard. You may be upgrading your existing skateboard with some premium skateboard trucks. Maybe you have wore out your existing trucks grinding like a pro. Whatever the reason, you need to look at a few things when you are deciding what trucks you want to purchase.
The first thing you need to look at is the bushings. They are the rubber part that flexes when you are turning. You can remove these and replace them to customize your skateboard. Harder rubber is more stable and stiffer when you turn. Softer bushings are looser and let you turn faster. Medium bushings are the default bushings on most trucks and are usually the best.
For skateboard trucks, the dimensions are the most critical item to consider. The first dimension is the truck height. Low skateboard trucks are more stable and allow you to do quick flip tricks better. High trucks allow you to use larger wheels which go faster and are better for park and half pipe skating. Medium sized trucks are good for both street, park, and half pipe skating.
The last dimension for skateboard trucks is the axle length. There really isn’t anything special you need to worry about here. You just want to make sure your trucks don’t hang out past your deck, you want your trucks to either be the length of your deck or just a little smaller.

One of the most important part of a skateboard is the skateboard wheels. The two most important factors are the hardness of the wheel and the diameter of the wheel. The larger the wheel usually the softer the wheel is, and vise versa for smaller wheels. The larger wheels allow you to go faster and also have a little bit more grip than smaller wheels. If you are doing a lot of skateboarding on ramps, half pipes, or down hills then you will want a larger wheel to get more speed and have more control. If you are going to be doing more street skating then you will probably want smaller wheels because they will be lighter and allow you to flip your skateboard easier. If you are going to do a lot of both street and park type skating, you may want to choose a medium sized wheel, such as a 54mm wheel.
